Scent profile

Boozy rum, cinnamon and sweet tobacco feel dark and magnetic, though the syrupy opening can turn medicinal on some skin.

Editorial assessment

Side Effect sits in Initio's Absolutes line, and it is the loudest thing the house makes in the sweet direction.\nAgainst Kilian Angels Share it is less refined and more forceful. Angels Share reads as cognac and cinnamon on a soft bed, Side Effect reads as rum poured over tobacco and left to soak. Whether that counts as an upgrade depends on how much subtlety you wanted. The bottle is heavy glass with a magnetic cap and the usual black label. It survives travel, though the atomizer sprays wide and wet, which makes overapplication easy. Batch variation is worth knowing about. Older bottles are reported drier in the drydown, newer ones sweeter and a little more synthetic in the vanilla. Nothing dramatic, but a blind buy will not always match a decant you tried two years ago. Value is the weak point. At this price you are paying for concentration and longevity more than for composition.
